Thermal comfort of novel low-momentum ventilation concepts for passengers in long-distance trains

Thermal comfort is essential to increase the modal share of rail transport by attracting more passengers. In this study, three novel low-momentum ventilation concepts were analyzed regarding thermal railway passengers and compared a conventional setting. Using an experimental approach, objective measurements climate parameters subjective assessments from 146 test subjects in generic train compartment analyzed. Results revealed significant differences perceived amongst four settings. Subjects reported comparatively higher hatrack integrated hybrid (HV) than cabin displacement (CDV) microjet (MJV). Vertical temperature stratification was strongest CDV, leading losses lower body parts. MJV, some temporary local exceedances air velocities observed, which contributed evaluations at heads shoulders. For all settings, warmer temperatures preferred. Our findings demonstrated that reasonably complement earlier results derived manikin studies. Therefore, ventilation, especially terms HV, has potential improve conditions for long-distance journeys passenger cars.
